Aenasius bambawalei Hayat (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), is a specific, solitary endoparasitoid ofPhenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley, a major invasive pest on cotton in all the cotton growing states in India. This paper provides a short diagnostic description of A. bambawalei with illustrations to facilitate easy identification and notes on the biology of A. bambawalei on P. solenopsis in the laboratory. The mean duration of development of A. bambawalei from egg laying to pupation was 8.85±0.21 days and pupation to adult emergence took 7.35±0.15 days in males and 7.00±0.16 in females. The mean total duration of development of A. bambawalei from egg laying to adult emergence was 16.10±0.25 days (range 14-18 days). The adults survived for 2-4 days on water, but the mean longevity was considerably enhanced on 50% honey (70.95±2.30 days in females and 49.00±2.35 days in males). Unmated females produced 100% male progeny. Four hyperparasitoids of A. bambawalei were recorded on field collected samples namely, Prochiloneurus pulchellus Silvestri, P. albifuniculus (Hayat et al.), and P. aegyptiacus (Mercet) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) and Promuscidea unfasciativentris Girault (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae).Keywords

The Chrysoperla species (carnea-group) widely used in India in augmentative biological control programmes was found to be Chrysoperla zastrowi arabica Henry et al. The acoustic profile of the mating song of this species was analyzed and found to match that of C. zastrowi arabica, the song species characterized earlier as 'Cc5 generator'. The correct taxonomic name for this species remains to be determined as it is morphologically identical to C. sillemi (Esben-Petersen), a species already known from India. Molecular characterization of the species was also done and the DNA sequence of the ITS-2 region was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. DQ 825504, as that of C. sillemi). The implications of this finding are discussed.Keywords

New distribution and host records of Chalcidoidea from various parts of India are listed. Eupelmas auiipodu Ashmead is recorded for the first time from the Indian subcontinent. Ischiodou scutettaris (F.) is a new host record for Syrpliopliagus aeruginosas (Dalman). In ail, 14 species including eight pteromalids, viz., Dinarmiis basaltis (Rondani), Merismomorpha uiiuuta Sureshan, Mesopolobus minutus Sureshan & Narendran, Oricoruna arcolensis (Mani & Kurian), Pachynenron aeneum Masi, Spliegigaster reticulata Sureshan & Narendran, Syutomopus carinaliis Sureshan & Narendran and Tricliomalopsis thekkadieusis Sureshan & Narendran; three encyrtids, viz., Cerchysius laticeps Kerrich, Homalotylus ferrierei Hayat et al., and Syrpliopliagus aeruginosas (Dalman); one culophid, Euderus albitarsis (Zetterstedt); and two eupelmids, viz., Aiiastatus acherontiae Narayanan et al. and Eupelmiis antipoda Ashmead, are recorded from different parts of India and the details are provided.Keywords

Biology and feeding potential of an anthocorid predator, Blaptostethus pallescens Pop pius were studied on the eggs of alternate host, Corcyra cephalonica (Stainton). Approximately 100 UV irradiated C. cephalonica eggs are required for rearing one nymph throughout its nymphal period of about 16 days (4-11 eggs per day) and 630 eggs for an adult throughout its longevity (3-19 eggs per day). Adult females had a greater feeding potential (943 eggs per adult) in comparison to males (381 eggs per adult). Utilising 9cc of C. cephalonica eggs, 1000 B. pallescens could be produced. The lab-reared adults had a very high longevity (38- 78 days) and fecundity (110-203 nymphs/female), indicating the suitability of C. cephalonica eggs for mass production.Keywords

Serious and unprecedented infestations by the sugarcane woolly aphid, Ceratovacuna lanigera Zehntner were witnessed on the leaves of 4·9 month old sugarcane crop in Kolhapur and Pune districts of Maharashtra during September-October, 2002. During surveys for natural enemies, seven predators were recorded in Kolhapur, of which Dipha?aphidivora (Meyrick) was observed to be the most promising. In Pune district, only Cheilomenes sexmaculata (Fabricius) was recorded. Limited field releases of the coccinellid, Synonycha grandis (Thunberg) collected from the bamboo woolly aphids at Bangalore and the chrysopid, Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) were made in a small area at Kolhapur. S. grandis adults and C. carnea eggs were recovered 2 to 3 weeks after release, indicating their survival in the field.Keywords

Sticholotis cribellata Sicard (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is recorded for the first time as a predator of Melanaspis glomerata (Green). Its host range and seasonal incidence are detailed and the immature stages described and illustrated. The egg, larval, and pupal stages lasted for 6.9. 19.5, and 8.6 days, respectively, and adult longevity was 40.41 days. The average fecundity was 48.9 eggs/female. The larvae and adults consumed on an average 653.95 and 1822.49 M. glomerata crawlers, respectively, throughout their life span. S. cribellata appears to be a promising bioagent of M. glomerata in view of its high feeding potential and amenability to large scale mass multiplication.Keywords

Encarsia dispersa Polaszek (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), an exotic parasitoid fortuitously introduced in India in the late 1990s along with spiralling whitefly, Aleurodicus dispersus Russell (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), is reported here as a parasitoid of the rugose spiralling whitefly, Aleurodicus rugioperculatus Martin, a recent invasive pest in India. This is the first report of this host association for E. dispersa, a parasitoid of many species of Aleurodicus in its native geographic range. This marks the reappearance of E. dispersa in South India more than a decade after its total displacement by E. guadeloupae. Predators of the rugose spiralling whitefly observed on banana in Tamil Nadu and Kerala are also listed.Keywords

Bulaea lividula bocandei Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), hitherto known from North Africa, the Middle East, and Pakistan, is recorded for the first time from India (Tamil Nadu). Suaeda maritima (L.) Dumort. (Chenopodiaceae), a common halophytic plant in mangroves, is recorded as a new host plant of B. lividula bocandei. A brief diagnostic account of the species with illustrations is given along with details on its host plants and distribution.Keywords

Coccinellid species belonging to fifteen genera, under five tribes of the family Coccinellidae were collected and identified in this study. Harmonia (Fab.) was the most predominant in southern regions and Coccinella septumpunctata L. was more abundant in the northern and hill regions. Margalef richness index ranged from 9.07 to 14.00 while the species richness directly measured by Hills number H0 ranged from 5-10, with highest species richness present at Malan, Himachal Pradesh. The highest predation was observed in female H. octomaculata which fed on a maximum of 8.00, 7.42 and 6.59 brown planthopper (BPH), WBPH white backed planthopper (WBPH) and green leafhopper (GLH) respectively per day, while the lowest was observed in Propylea dissecta which fed on 3.18 to 4.50 hoppers per day. Coccinellids like H. octomaculata can be utilized in biological control programmes as a part of Integrated Pest Management to reduce pest outbreaks.Keywords
